Transmission Repair Cost

by Gaines Arnold

The sun is bright outside and you decide that after work you are going to take the road less traveled home and go a different way than you are used to. Of course, you are paying attention to the birds singing, the breeze blowing through your sparse hair and the clots playing in the field. There is no indication that you gather that your car is starting to labor and now is starting to clunk and miss gears as you meander along. Well the scenic route has come to an end and you put your foot on the trusty accelerator to power your way more quickly the ten miles that you remain from home. But your trust in the workings that usually engage when you press your foot down is betrayed. When you stomp, your car bucks and twists like a ride at the county fair and after a few short minutes you may as well say a eulogy because that sucker is not going any farther. After slamming open the door in front of some curious cows, who just a moment ago were idyllic, you stomp around to the hood, open it and peer in. nothing jumps out as to the problem. So you call a buddy who is “good with cars” and he tells you that it sounds like the transmission. “Great,” you say. “What does a transmission repair cost?”

The problem with estimating transmission repair cost over the phone, even if you happen to be talking to a trained mechanic, is that there are many different issues that this complex piece of a great number of moving parts can offer. The belts that make your automatic shift work may be loose (a relatively inexpensive repair) or you could have gear teeth that are worn which usually means a new transmission or at least an overhaul. The many problems that can be had also cause the price of those items to vary greatly. You could have a torque converter that is causing problems or valves that are sticking.

One way to reduce transmission repair cost is to see what you can do yourself. If you have no idea what a transmission even is, then you may need to call someone who does and assist them while they look for problems. Sometimes your owner’s manual will give you some clue, you could buy a Chilton’s manual for your vehicle to give you a better idea, or have a mechanic do a free diagnostic test to tell you what it is exactly. The best way though is to look at it. The diagnostics usually will not tell you anything about you transmission and the check engine soon lights are usually for the engine not the transmission.

Unfortunately probably the best thing to do when you have an issue is to take it to a licensed mechanic, but there are preventative measures. Make sure that the transmission fluid is at the proper level. If you take your car in for oil changes they will generally top it off, but if you do your own oil changes check all of the necessary fluids and the air filter every time you do it. You can also put some additives in that will lubricate the transmission better and give you longer life.

The fact is that most things break down and the best that you can do is to hop that you are only a few miles from home or a mechanic when it does. To lower transmission repair cost prevention is worth a pound of cure.
