Just What the Heck is a Transmission Anyway?

And at high speeds higher gears will reduce the torque enough to keep your wheels from flying off.

This variable torque is achieved by matching up different sized gears. For example, torque can be increased by matching a small gear to a larger one.

Where is your transmission located? In front-wheel drive cars, the transmission is usually located on the side of the engine in alignment with the front-axle. In rear-wheel drive cars, the transmission can be found in alignment with the driveshaft. In any case, in order to inspect or work on the transmission, you will need to lift the car and look underneath.

What does it look like? The transmission is covered by a metal case with a distinctive bell-like cone shape, which is why this part is referred to as the bell-housing.
